Disabled man gets jail for theft attempt, diaper-stealing mom serves a day

KUALA LUMPUR, March 13 — A disabled man was sentenced today to a year in jail after pleading guilty to the charge of trying to steal a vehicle’s radio cassette player last week.

Magistrate Azmil Muntapha Abas of the Magistrate’s Court here ordered Choong Fook Soon to serve his sentence from his March 9 arrest date, Bernama reported.

The car was parked on Jalan Sri Sentosa, Taman Sri Sentosa, Off Jalan Klang Lama here when the crime was attempted at 10pm last Friday.

Choong was charged under Section 379A of the Penal Code, read together with Section 511, which provides a maximum seven years’ jail sentence and fine, upon conviction.

The same court sentenced a young mother to day in jail and a RM500 fine, in default of a month in jail, after she pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a RM49.90 worth packet of disposable napkins.

Yeong Ai Yong, 23, committed the crime at a Setiawangsa supermarket at 5.35pm on March 8.

The mother of a five-month-old child was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code which provides a maximum 10 years' jail sentence and fine, if found guilty.

Both cases were prosecuted by deputy public prosecutor Siti Aisyah Ahmad.
