Opposition will milk this one dry

Head of Women's wing, enmeshed in Cowgate, apparently will retain her post

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak apparently is having considerable trouble persuading Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, the minister for women, family and community development and the source of a controversy over alleged misuse of public funds, to quit the United Malays National Organization.

It was announced three weeks ago that Shahrizat, who also serves as the head of Wanita Umno, the women’s wing of the party, would step down from the ministry when her Senate* term ends on April 8 as a result of what has become known as the Cowgate scandal. Her husband, Mohamed Salleh Ismail, and other members of the family have been accused of misusing a major portion of a RM250 million soft loan from the government to establish the National Feedlot Corporation, to slaughter cattle under Islamic dietary rules.

Mohamed Salleh Ismail has been charged with criminal breach of trust and violating the Companies Act in relation to allegations of misuse of RM49 million of the funds given to the company. According to a report by Malaysia’s Auditor General, the money was steered into the purchase of things that had nothing to do with the project to slaughter 60,000 cattle annually. The Auditor General found that the project had never come remotely close to meeting its goals. Subsequent allegations have involved the purchase of condominiums in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, travel for the family, a Mercedes-Benz sedan for Shahrizat and other items.

Former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad reportedly has repeatedly told party leaders Shahrizat must go, party insiders say, and her main protector, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, is also said to be backing away from supporting her.

“Dr M wants her out and his people have told me so,” a source told Asia Sentinel. “So does Muhyiddin who is distancing himself from her. So she is quite alone.”

Sujang commits himself to PKR

There's no looking back for former PRS founding member Patrick Sibat Sujang who will now be helping Pakatan Rakyat consolidate its strength in Sarawak.

KUCHING: Patrick Sibat Sujang, a former advisor to Sarawak Land Development Minister James Masing, will continue his political struggle under the PKR banner.

Sujang, who is an authority on native customary rights (NCR), was Masing’s ‘key’ man and a founding member of Parti Rakyat Sarawak. He quit the party two days ago citing the party leaders’s inability to fight for the interests of the Dayak community especially on the issue of native customary right (NCR) land.

Throwing his lot behind PKR, Sujang met with PKR de facto president Anwar Ibrahim, deputy president Azmin Ali and other Pakatan Rakyat leaders in parliament and pledged his allegiance to “fight a bigger cause”.

In a statement issued to FMT, Sujang said: “I came to Kuala Lumpur to make courtesy call on Pakatan Rakyat leaders. I met Anwar Ibrahim, Saifuddin Nasution, Tian Chua, Nurul Izzah, Mahfuz Omar of PAS, Anthony Loke of DAP, Johari Abdul, Fuziah Salleh, and briefly met Lim Kit Siang.

“I stated that I have decided to continue my political struggle for Sarawakians in the country through Pakatan Rakyat.

“I believe in Pakatan polices and that the leaders have the wisdom and competency to implement all the good polices required to make Malaysia a better place for all communities.

“I have also told Anwar that I fully support Sarawak PKR leaders led by Baru Bian and will assist him to consolidate Pakatan strength in the state,” Sujang said.

According to Sujang, Azmin was glad to hear that more intellectuals in Sarawak were coming out to support Pakatan.

“Azmin also said that the party election committee would discuss with the state leadership committee in Sarawak on the selection of the best candidates for each of the parliamentary seats.

“This coming general election is a critical one for the country, ” Sujang said adding that he had been invited to join Anwar on his visit to Sri Aman and Saratok on April 8 and later to Baram and Linggi, constituencies where PRS-Barisan Nasional is facing revolts over allegations of land grabs.

Taib-linked firm fails to strike out suit by natives

The Kuching High Court has ruled that a case involving Taib Mahmud-linked Naim Cendera Sdn Bhd and six natives will go for full trial.

KUCHING: Yet another company linked to Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud has failed in its bid to strike out claims by six native landowners on technical grounds.

Naim Cendera Sdn Bhd is owned by Hamid Sepawi, who is Taib’s first cousin.

Naim Cendera Sdn Bhd together with the Superintendent of Lands and Surveys of Kuching Division and Sarawak State Government are being sued by the plaintiffs – Simon Sekam, Tasek Ayau, Eddie Ahang, Bodui Dayu, Bungai Bengen and Sirus Jon over 6,046 ha of land in Upper Bengoh in Kuching Division.

The natives are claiming that they have native customary right (NCR) over the land, which they said has been encroached upon by the Naim Cendera and its agents.

When the case came before the Kuching High Court on Monday, Justice Sangau Gunting rejected their application to strike out the claims by the six natives on technical grounds.

The High Court here ruled that the case will go for a full trial.

Taib’s men ‘sold out’ on natives

The millions of ringgit worth of contracts that Taib Mahmud gave to his ministers and elected representatives had come at a price.

KUCHING: Deputy Foreign Minister Richard Riot is in a quandary over recent online disclosures that his son’s company was allegedly awarded contracts worth millions of ringgit to build roads in his Serian constituency in Sarawak but did nothing about it.

The allegations which have gone viral come on the heel of other disclosures involving senior Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) officials and Ministers in Chief Minister Taib Mahmud’s state administration.

It is now appears that this is how Taib has, over the years, “bought” the loyalty of his leaders at the expense of their respective communities.

MACC report against DCM Jabu, deputy minister and MP

Recent online disclosures of Taib Mahmud's lead ministers being awarded government contracts in a bid to keep them 'loyal' have resulted in a MACC report.

KUCHING: Sarawak PKR’s Youth wing has lodged a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) against federal level deputy minister Fadillah Yusof, Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Alfred Jabu Numpang and an MP for allegedly enriching themselves at the expense of the people.

Fadillah is the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, while the MP concerned in Hulu Rajang parliamentarian Billy Abit Joo.

State PKR Youth chief Ahmad Najib lodged the report on behalf of his wing following online revelations of contracts worth millions which were awarded to the three public figures.

“The allegations are very serious, and the MACC must conduct an immediate investigation,” Ahmad said, adding that he expects MACC to get it touch with him soon to record his statement.

The MACC report was made following news reports of ‘power abuse’ on online investigative portal Sarawak Report.

Bruno Manser Fund accuses SEB CEO Torstein Dale Sjotveit of ‘deliberately misleading’ the public with regards to the construction of the 12 dams in the state.

The natives of Baram, affected by the construction of the Baram dam, are claiming that they were not aware of the extinguishment of their native customary rights (NCR) over their land.

Accusing the government of surreptitiously implementing its contentious plans to build the dam, they said that they were unaware that the government had begun extinguishing such rights since last June.

“Most of the landowners are not aware of the extinguishment exercise on their land. It means they have lost their rights and will not be paid any compensation,” said Peter Kallang, chairman of the SAVE Rivers Network.

‘Dams built to keep Taib’s CMS in business’

The opposition in Sarawak wants to know if social impact studies were or are being done on the proposed dams.

KUCHING: The opposition here claim that the real reason the state government is constructing 12 hydro-electric dams in Sarawak is to ensure a ‘guaranteed business’ for Cahaya Mata Sarawak (CMS), a company owned by Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud’s family members.

Making this allegation, Bandar Kuching MP Chong Chieng Jen said: “I think the whole thing about the state government going on foolhardily on these dam construction is to give a guaranteed business to CMS which is owned by Taib’s family members.

“These dam projects will need a lot of cement and building materials from CMS.”

“The second reason is that under the pretext of constructing the dams, they can go on uninhibited logging activities.

“Those are the real reasons for this foolhardiness,” he added.

All the GLC's are still in Malay hands, but not for long; otherwise all will be sold off in no time at all. As a people, the Malays are not known for perseverance and enduring commitment. They have no business acumen. Being entrepreneurial is a steep climb for them and the Malays have no stamina to stomach the strains and stresses. I speak from experience. They are easily swayed by circumstances.

More than half our local workforce are pendatangs (Indons, Myanmars, Nepals, Vietnamese, Banglas!) This country is not only bankrupt as said by Idris Jala, but also - telah dilelongkan. The poorer of the majority Malays left behind will become beggars and mat rempit, mat gian, mat ragut and mat dadah (they are all subsidized by our government funding to buy their No 1 drugs of escapism to run away from a harsh reality - Metadon). Who culled their own Malay race? Nobody but UMNO-BN itself! I rest my case.

During the Mahathir reign, Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud had a free reign and in return he contributed millions to ensure Mahathir’s victories.

What Chief Minister Taib Mahmud has been doing as the Sarawak state leader is contrary to the people’s true aspirations.

The projects and developments are mainly inter-connected with his politics of deception and money.

As such, these projects and developments are designed to keep him in power rather than for the well-being and betterment of the economy and people.

Let us examine how Taib’s ploys enable him to hold on to power:

Masing’s ‘key’ man to quit party

The much rumoured exit of a Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) leader is expected to trigger an exodus to the opposition.

KUCHING: Rumours are rife that a ‘lead’ official of Parti Rakyat Sarawak’s (PRS) highest policy making-body is expected to resign and join the opposition PKR later this month.

Patrick Sibat Sujang, who is a founding member of PRS, is expected to hand his application to de facto PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim during the latter’s visit to Kuching on April 1.

Sujang’s resignation is expected to trigger an exodus from the party.

Sujang, who is also an advisor to PRS president and Land Development Minister James Masing on the native customary rights (NCR) land matters, is offering himself as a potential candidate for the Baram parliamentary constituency.

We can demonstrate that Malaysia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, the BN/SUPP MP for Serian Richard Riot, has also been involved in the disgusting practice of profiting out of projects meant for his own constituency.

In this case a RM9.3million ringgit road building project has been awarded to a company he controls through his son, Akjaemura Jaya Sdn Bhd.

The issue of roads is particularly sensitive in Richard Riot’s constituency.  The Bidayuh communities of this border area have seen their lands badly destroyed by logging and oil palm, all in the name of ‘development’ by BN.

However, time and again roads that have been promised before elections have not been built.

Indeed, just before the state elections last year, road building equipment was even rolled into the constituency and voters were told to vote BN to guarantee the start of the work – only for all the equipment to be taken away again straight after the election!

How long does Richard Riot, who is now Deputy President of BN’s crony party SUPP, think he can get away with a game like that?

Enough is enough in Serian?

No wonder SUPP lost so many of its seats at the State Election last year, if that is how they treat their constituents!

Anger flares up

There is no doubt about the anger in Serian.  It burst into flames not long ago in Tebedu when logging trucks, which had been encroaching onto native lands with the full support of Taib’s government, were dramatically set on fire.

The Bidayuh are famously good-natured and tolerant types, but how often can you lie to them without them coming to some inevitable conclusions?

Another road scandal in the area has been recorded, as possibly the most expensive ever stretch of road that was never built.

The Terbat-Mapu 5 kilometre road has seen two ribbon cutting ceremonies, as BN politicians have helicoptered in to take credit for the award of development money for the project.
But it remains unmade!

Look at Richard Riot and his state counter-part Michael Manyin here again boasting of their road-building efforts in the Borneo Post!  Did this project (managed by the Taib/Hamid Sepawi owned company Naim Cendera) ever get beyond the ribbon-cutting stage?

‘Projects for my area’

So, it is particularly sensitive that Richard Riot has his name on the contract for one of these most recent ‘proposed’ road projects in his constituency.

The contract concerned is “The Construction & Completion Of Proposed Jalan Kpg. Sorak Melayu, Serian, Bahagian Samarahan”, according to Malaysia’s official Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) website.

Nice ten million ringgit project!

This job has been awarded to Akjaemura Jaya Sdn Bhd, a private company that this MP for Serian and Federal Deputy Foreign Minister of Malaysia controls!

Richard Riot is the big cheese shareholder in this company handling the road project!

For BN politicians the logic of such projects is compelling (as long as no one exposes them). They get to take the credit for the project in front of all their constituents, while controlling the budget!

This means that they can sub-contract the work to another grateful constituent and political ally (for a lot less) and use any spare money for themselves, political hangers on, party business, bribes for headmen etc etc.

If the road actually gets built, well that is an added bonus, but not guaranteed!

We don’t know the details (yet) of how Deputy Foreign Minister, Richard Riot, has spent the money for this particular project.  However, we do know that he should never have been given the opportunity.  Politicians should NEVER take money awarded for state contracts into companies controlled by themselves or close family members.

It is corrupt and we all know why!

Outraged readers of Sarawak Report have been queuing up to dish the dirt on BN’s Dirty Datuks over the past few days.

We have received widespread information about corrupted practices from insiders, who are clearly sickened by the greedy YBs, who have been cheating their constituents for decades.

And it seems that many of those YBs, who have been in office longest, have lost any shame over admitting that they use their positions as elected representatives to get public contracts.

Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Assemblyman for Tarat, who has been in office since 1996, is one such example.

He openly proclaims on his Sarawak Page entry, next to his lengthy political career, the fact that he is also the Director of Cottage Holdings Sdn Bhd.

Cottage Holdings is a contractor, which has received a string of public commissions ever since Sagah got his seat in 1996!

Tight shot - the private office where you had best try reaching this publicly elected official. Hope he has time for his constituent business with all those contracts to worry about!

Cottage Holdings may sound a humble affair, but it actually does very big business indeed.

Under the title of ‘General Works” and ‘Transportation Services’, it has won a numerous public contracts.

Starting in 1998, two years after Sagah settled into office as a faithful PBB State Assemblyman, the work has just flowed into the company from the grateful government.

The list at the official Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) shows no less than 59 major public contracts totalling some RM50 million !

RM50 million in contracts may not be the same sort of money that the likes of Alfred Jabu, the Deputy Chief Minister has been making out of the companies his own family runs. Or indeed Daud Abdul Rahman’s Eastbourne Corporation construction and property empires, which are worth billions.

However, as a former barrister trained at Grays Inn, London, Roland Sagah can only be too aware of what constitutes conflict of interest.  And he knows that his new career as a part-time politician/ part-time construction company director is a very good example of it.

Clearly, he just wasn’t making enough out of his legal practice and his Assemblyman’s salary to keep him and his wife happy.  In fact it is his wife, Kelly Ak Rebid, who lives with him at his home, aptly named Mirubuh Cottage, who is his fellow Director and Sharholder of the company!

Govt urged to show ‘political will’ in S’wak

'Even a kampung road in Peninsular Malaysia is much better than our Trans-Borneo Highway and the successes of Felda, Felcra and Risda make us feel jealous,' said a BN MP from Sarawak.

KUCHING: Kapit’s Barisan Nasional MP, Alex Nanta Linggi has warned the BN government that it may lose its rural areas if nothing is done to help the people.

Speaking during the debate on the royal address in parliament, Nanta said the rural areas in Sarawak, including Kapit, are considered fixed deposits of the Barisan Nasional.

“But the fixed deposit does not mirror the real situation in the rural areas in terms of development.

“Kapit is one of the remote areas without road linking it to other towns in Sarawak. I don’t want to pretend to give a glowing picture of Kapit, because development is not there.

“All the development promises like the construction of a trunk road are yet to be implemented.

“It is sad to say that in this rich state, poverty is the hallmark. It appears to be a permanent feature even though Sarawak has been independent for more than 40 years,” he said.

Sarawak hospitals in ‘deplorable’ state

Sarawak is in dire need of hospitals and specialist manpower and the government is just not doing enough.

KUCHING: The federal Health Ministry has come under fire for the deplorable conditions in hospitals in Sibu and Lawas.

According to Sibu MP, Wong Ho Leng, on any given day, there are “no less than 40 family members” or caregivers sprawled on the floors and corridors in the wards.

He said the Hospital Sibu which caters for more than 500,000 people is now known as a ‘third class’ hospital without sufficient specialists and surgeons.

“I agree with many in Sibu who complained that Hospital Sibu is third class.

“The Hospital Sibu caters for more than half a million people in Sibu and the hinterland of the Rajang River like Kapit, Belaga, Song, Kanowit, Bintangor and Sarikei.

Oil spill: Why no action against CMS?

Why is the government hesitant about hauling-up Taib Mahmud-linked CMS Premix for the massive oil spill in Liku River last month?

KUCHING: The opposition in Sarawak want action to be taken against CMS Premix, a company linked to Chief Minister Taib Mahmud, for allegedly spilling oil into the Liku River which is the main source of drinking water for 300,000-strong population in Miri.

The fact that no investigation has been initiated todate is indicative of the Barisan Nasional’s atitude towards environment disasters, said Bandar Kuching MP Chong Chien Jen.

“Why are investigation and action not taken? Is it because CMS Premix belongs to the family members of Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud?

“Is the government going to take action against CMS premix, carry out an investigation and prosecute CMS premix and its directors in court?

Women in the West are given to grumbling about the ‘glass ceiling’ that prevents even the most qualified and hard-working females from getting top management jobs and directorships.

However, their Sarawak sisters seem to have no such difficulties – as long as they are Datins that is.

The ‘Super Datins’ of Sarawak seem to achieve the most enviable positions at the helm of timber companies, plantation companies and major construction companies, even without qualifications or, indeed, working hard!

But, once someone has embarked on cheating their people to get rich, they don’t stop.  They keep looking for more.

So, we can now present some more of the corrupt sources of income that explain the extravagant wealth of three of these BN politicians, DCM Alfred Jabu, Fadillah Yusof and MP Billy Abit Joo, which contrasts so painfully with the poverty of their constituents.

Taib Mahmud has no legal right to ban anyone from entering Sarawak unless they have violated the Immigration Act or the federal constitution.

On Feb 23 this year the Bersih 2.0 steering committee at state level was formed here in Kuching.

There are 31 parliamentary seats at stake in Sarawak. Hence it is important that the general election should be conducted in a clean and fair manner throughout the country including Sarawak and Sabah.

At the last polls, the voter turnout was about 65% on the average. However in the rural areas the turnout was lower than the state average.

Hence Bersih 2.0 feels that it is necessary to intensify voters’ registration exercise through its JOM100 campaign, with the objective to instil awareness among the people of the importance of voting in the coming 13th GE and to register as many voters as possible to ensure they can exercise their democratic rights on polling day.

Statistics show SCORE won’t benefit locals

With a low post-secondary education penetration level in Sarawak, it is unlikely that locals will get jobs in the Sarawak Corridor for Renewable Energy.

KUCHING: If the labour force survey statistics for 2008-2011 is any yardstick then Taib Mahmud’s much touted Sarawak Corridor of Renewal Energy (SCORE) will be of no benefit to locals least of all the indigenous communities who will be left far behind.

According to Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian the figures from the Department of Statistics don’t offer any indications that locals will enjoy the fruits from SCORE.

“This is because SCORE will need highly skilled labour force, and our people, especially those in the rural areas have little opportunities to complete their school studies and go on to tertiary level.

“From the labour force survey (2008-2010) of the Department of Statistics, out of Sarawak’s labour force, only 17% or 166,175 people have any form of post secondary education,” he said.
